Christmas Bird Count

The Christmas Bird Count is a national event run annually by the National Audubon Society.  It was established in 1900 and you can read more about its fascinating inception and history at https://www.audubon.org/community-science/christmas-bird-count/history-of-christmas-bird-count . 

Here in Pasco, we have an East and West Pasco Christmas Bird Count every year.  The West Pasco CBC, which began in 1989, is the one most closely associated with Pasco Audubon.  While no single year provides a comprehensive understanding of bird trends in our area, looking at data spread over 30+ years we can see trends emerging by species. 

Each year we select a day to hold the count.  Based on nationally determined rules it must be between December 14th and January 6th.  Typically 40-50 birders help out on our big day, forming around 30 teams of 1-4 people. Each team birds a specific pre-determined area.   While it undoubtedly helps to be a birder with some experience, we do try to find a way for anyone interested to be able to participate.  To learn more or volunteer for the annual Chrismtas Bird Count (CBC), please contact us at info@pascoaudubon.com.
